What is the housing allowance?

The housing allowance is a monthly government contribution for tenants on low income. In 2026, important changes take effect: the maximum rent limit is removed, the age limit dropped from 23 to 21, and only base rent counts (not service charges).

Who is eligible?

  • Tenants aged 21+ (was 23+)
  • Tenants aged 18-20 (lower max rent)
  • You rent an independent dwelling
  • You are registered at the rental address
  • Dutch nationality or valid residence permit

  • Income limits depend on household composition
  • Assets max €146,011 (single) or €184,633 (with partner)
  • Maximum rent limit removed in 2026
  • Only base rent counts, not service charges
  • Age limit lowered from 23 to 21
