What is the healthcare allowance?
The healthcare allowance is a government contribution to keep health insurance affordable for people with lower incomes. You apply via the Tax Authority (Belastingdienst/Toeslagen) using DigiD. The amount depends on your income, assets and whether you have a benefit partner. The allowance is paid monthly as an advance.
Who is eligible?
- You are 18 years or older
- You have Dutch health insurance
- You have Dutch nationality or valid residence permit
- Single: income up to €40,857 per year
- With partner: joint income up to €51,142 per year
Asset limits 2026
- Single: max €146,011 on 1 January 2026
- With partner: max €184,633 on 1 January 2026
- No social assistance for living expenses
- Your insurance must be a basic health insurance
How much healthcare allowance in 2026?
- Single: max €129/month (€1,548/year)
- With partner: max €246/month (€2,952/year)
- Higher income means lower allowance
- Minimum income earners receive the maximum amount
- Above the income limit, no entitlement
